AHPO Level 5 Diploma in Ophthalmic and Vision Science

Overview:

The Level 5 Diploma in Ophthalmic and Vision Science (OVS) is a qualification designed to meet the learning needs of ophthalmic associates who have completed the BTEC Level 4 Diploma in Healthcare Science / Ophthalmic and Vision Science and wish to extend their knowledge and skills to the level required for an ophthalmic assistant practitioner.

For learners who have not taken the Level 4 BTEC Diploma, AHPO can deliver this concurrently with the Level 5 AHPO Diploma and on completion the learner will be awarded the Level 4 BTEC Diploma and the Level 5 AHPO Diploma. Please note: the Level 4 BTEC element would be externally awarded by Pearson, but the Level 5 element would be an internally awarded AHPO qualification. Together, the Level 4 BTEC Diploma and the Level 5 AHPO Diploma have 240 credits, equivalent to a Foundation Degree.

Duration:

You must be working in an ophthalmic environment and thus course delivery is part-time. The average completion time for the AHPO Level 5 Diploma is 12-18 months and you can start the course at anytime throughout the year. The average completion time for the BTEC Level 4 Diploma with the AHPO Level 5 Diploma is 30-42 months.

What’s Included:

AHPO have designed the Level 5 Diploma offer to be specific to the practice of ophthalmology. The learner will gain skills in undertaking a comprehensive patient examination including slit lamp examination and application tonometry; structural measurements of the eye including biometry; imaging the posterior segment of the eye with modalities that include fundus photography, optical coherence tomography and scanning laser ophthalmoscopy; and imaging the anterior segment of the eye. Ocular angiography can be undertaken as an optional unit.

There are 120 Credits to be completed on the Level 5 Diploma.

All learners will receive; an experienced and knowledgeable assessor, a tablet to support learning, comprehensive eBooks, an ePortfolio and much more.

How learners are assessed:

Upon application of the Level 5 Diploma, you will be allocated an assessor.

Achievement of the qualification is based around the provision of sufficient evidence to show that the job can be done to national standards. You will need to collect a variety of evidence within your e-portfolio.

  • Observation
  • Questioning
  • Work products
  • Professional discussion
  • Recognition of prior learning
  • Witness statements
  • Reflective accounts

Completion:

When all outcomes have been achieved, your  e-portfolio will be reviewed by the internal quality assurer.

On successful completion you will receive certification.
